Yes, before I start I acknowledge that I did say that the previous blog would be the last one for Thailand, but the cooking class was such a cool experience I simply couldn’t leave it out. We got to the cooking class van, which conveniently stopped in front of where we were staying. We then proceeded to drive to a local food market where we would buy the majority of our ingredients. We also got time to try out products for our personal use, and we spent this time buying bugs. Yes, bugs. I decided not to think about them as I grabbed a handful from the bag and shoved them into my mouth. Surprisingly, they tasted like chips! If you ever visit Thailand, I recommend the crickets. They were by far the crunchiest and had the best flavour if anyone is interested. Once we treated ourselves with bugs, we moved on to the cooking class.
When we arrived, we headed to the garden where we forged more ingredients along with learning about their properties and the conditions needed for them to grow. We then all tried out incredibly spicy peppers which we all ended up regretting. We then finally started cooking. Our ‘teacher’ first told us what to cook and how to do so. The class had a few groups, which we all got along well with. We also got to choose our dish out of a few options for each course, which I thought was a neat addition. However, the teacher made the class much more memorable. She was probably the most hilarious person I had come across in my entire life. She also had tattoos of her deceased dogs along her arm, which perfectly describes her personality. In total, I made five courses, all delicious in their own right, although my favourite one had to be the curry. The rich flavours and the fragrant aromas hit differently. We said goodbyes to our teacher and our newfound friends and took an aeroplane a day later to Krabi. Little did we know, we would be sitting next to the very people we cooked with a day ago. Luckily, we got along so the flight wasn’t awkward but it was a surprise for all of us. Furthermore, they were going to Japan, the very country we had just come from. This leads me to wonder, was this a coincidence or something else?
I am kidding. Overall, the cooking class was the best one I had gone to and I had a blast, making all of the fond memories I will probably remember for a very long time. I cannot recommend the Thai Farm Cooking Class in Chiang Mai (not sponsored) more, and with that, I’ll see you in Bali!
